The Emotional Side of Socioeconomic Status

The out-sized effect of socioeconomic status on people’s health and wellbeing makes it a good topic to study through the lens of Bowen theory. Increasing understanding of the instinctive/emotional forces that regulate people’s reactions to status and lack of status may provide individuals with greater flexibility in managing themselves in stressful social positions. A major question for researchers has been: what is it about SES that affects people’s health so profoundly? Is it a lack of autonomy? A lack of social connection? This presentation will cover the results of research, including a finding that a primary drive to increase income and social position, even if successful, as opposed to a life lived for meaning, may bring about the same poor health effects as low SES.

Laurie Lassiter, PhD, MSW

Laurie Lassiter, PhD, MSW trained with Murray Bowen in the Georgetown Postgraduate Program and consulted with him about her own family from 1986 to 1990. She has presented at the Bowen Center Symposia and other conferences since 1991 and has written several articles and book chapters. Based on her learning from Dr. Bowen, she introduced a triangle hypothesis, the regulation of individuals to function for the emotional system. For over 15 years, she maintained an association with the biologist Lynn Margulis, from whom she learned about the social lives of microorganisms, including present-day representatives of early life. Dr. Margulis believed that Bowen theory could be applied even to nonhuman forms of life. Dr. Lassiter continues to coach individuals in the theory and to participate in groups to expand the theory.
